Where to Stay In Guanajuato: The 9 Best Hotels for Every Budget

This post will guide you through the best hotels in Guanajuato that I have personally visited and reviewed precisely to help you decide where to stay in Guanajuato.

I was especially hunting for luxury hotels but I have seen different kinds of properties for every pocket.

What I consider luxury hotels are small boutique hotels where the stylish and high-end decoration is matched by the same excellence in service.

Guanajuato is a beautiful charming city full of history, legends, and interesting traditions, attracting visitors from all sides of Mexico and internationally.

In this list of Guanajuato hotels, I mention the 5 ones that  I consider top luxury properties plus I give you other options for mid-range and low-budget hotels.

Of course, this is just according to my personal taste, opinion, and experience besides the star ratings and comments of other guests.

Where to stay in Guanajuato: Luxury boutique hotels

1. La Casa del Rector

This hotel ranks at the top hotels in Guanajuato for me. It has something special, be it for the history behind its building or the elegant rooms, or the stunning views of the city’s charming historical center.

As the name itself suggests, the original building where the hotel sits, was previously the house of the first Dean of the prestigious University of Guanajuato, Armando Olivares, a literate who gave a great impulse to the cultural growth of the city of Guanajuato with his poetry and cultural initiatives, including the foundation of a library which has now its name.

The house is one of the oldest in the city and its beautiful facade is one of the prettiest in its road, in the typical style of the  XIX century.

Previously it was also home to general Florencio Antillón, uncle of the famous writer  Jorge Ibargüengoitia, a name in the history of Mexico for his participation in the war of Puebla

You can feel the presence of history through the wall of the hotel and some paintings.

The modern rooms’ design elegantly matches the classic tone of the old colonial building with a more modern minimalist taste, more suitable for the new, sophisticated traveler in search of style and comfort.

The outdoor design is also one of a kind, the restaurant walls are made of Cantera stones taken from the leftovers of the mining works.

The views from the Sky bar are breathtaking, especially at sunset.

2. Hotel 1850

This brand new hotel is located right in the heart of the lively city right beside the majestic Teatro Juarez.

The elegance of this property stands in the fine French interior decorations in the rooms, each one individually designed and inspired by and named after the ladies of the owners’ families.

Everything about this hotel is carefully thought of, the artworks hanging from the ceiling as much as on the walls and the wallpaper, with a different pattern in each room.

Despite being right in the center of the busy city, the double windows provide total isolation, peace, and tranquility in your cozy stylish room.

An attentive concierge team will assist you with tours and restaurant reservations or anything you will need to make your stay in Guanajuato more comfortable. A rooftop bar will be the perfect place to watch the sunset in Guanajuato in style.

Among the hotels I have visited in the city, this is indeed the most classy and elegant.

3. VIlla Maria Cristina Relais & Châteaux

This elegant property is located in a newly reformed neighborhood at about 2 km distance from the city center. I was staying in the same area during my two weeks spent in Guanajuato, and it’s an enjoyable walk through the city lanes.

The Relais & Châteaux signature is a guarantee of quality service and exceptional beauty, therefore any further comment on my part would actually be irrelevant.

I have visited this property and, although I didn’t stay there, I could feel and experience the exclusive atmosphere, in the immaculate outdoor spaces, the gardens and the pool area, the indoor pool and spa.

The suites are huge and elegant with a high ceiling, wooden floor, and French stylish furniture, marble bathroom with a whirlpool.

4. Quinta Las Acacias Hotel Boutique

This lovely boutique hotel is a restored private house from the XIX century and it has conserved the antique style and feel in the room decorations.

The public spaces have been extended with more additional rooms which embed the old tradition with the modern Mexican artworks and style.

The rooms in the new building surround a beautiful and peaceful garden where you can only hear the sound of nature. This property is in fact situated at about 2 km distance from the city center, in the same area as the previously mentioned Villa Maria Cristina, in a nice and peaceful bohemian neighborhood, the oldest of Guanajuato.

The hotel offers exceptional service, views to the mountains surrounding the city, and a fine dining restaurant. Close to the area, there is also a beautiful hike on a close by hill.

5. Hotel Edelmira

Like many of the historic hotel in Guanajuato also Edelmira Hotel was previously a private home which was refurbished and turned into a luxury boutique hotel.

As you walk into the lobby you can immediately admire the old feeling in the big grey stone walls and vaults harmoniously in contrast with the modern and elegant rooms, decorated with modern art and equipped with the finest linen.

The hotel is located right in the center of the city at an easy distance from all the points of attraction and historical places and museums, restaurants, and bars.

Do not get intimidated by the name which I find a little creepy. This is another great option to stay in the heart of Guanajuato in a nice hotel with a cheap budget.
