I went on this excursion with a friend, and we had a blast! History of Tequila in Mexico
Tequila has a rich and colorful history that is deeply ingrained in the cultural traditions of Mexico.
It all began hundreds of years ago – around 200 AD – when the Aztecs started fermenting an agave-based drink called pulque.
Now, this sap was nowhere similar to the tequila we know today, but the milky liquid had quite the significance in Aztec culture, so much so that they worshiped two gods for their relationship to it.
Then came the Spaniards in the 1400s, who ended up using mud and agave to distill mezcal wine – the grandparent spirit of tequila.
During this Colonial era, in the early 1600s, the Marquis of Altamira began the large-scale production of tequila in what is now considered the city of Tequila, Jalisco – which lends this traditional spirit its name.
Just a few hundred years after that, between the 1700s and 1800s, the Cuervo and Sauza families started commercially distilling tequila.

The haciendas built by the Spanish became the primary production grounds for tequila.
And as time passed, this beverage evolved into what we now know as tequila.
Shortly before the start of the 21st century, the Mexican government declared tequila as its intellectual property – meaning that the beverage can only be produced within certain regions of Mexico, and no other country can legally produce its own tequila.
It goes without saying that the beverage is one of the most popular drinks of the region today, available in countless varieties and cocktails.
