What comes to mind when you imagine a trip to Tulum? If I were to guess, it’s definitely a self-indulgent vacation on the beach, in one of the best luxury hotels, with delicious food, and an abundance of nature all around you.
But not all the luxury hotels in Tulum are created equal, and even the most expensive and popular luxury hotels aren’t guaranteed to suit your preferences. So I have made this list of the best luxury hotels in Tulum to help you choose the perfect place for your wonderful Tulum vacation.
Before we dive into the details of the hotels that I’m going to show you, let me tell you a little bit about Tulum itself first.
The city’s main attractions— the well-preserved Tulum Maya ruins and white-sand beaches—bring thousands of tourists here every year.
But those two aren’t the only reasons, because Tulum is also full of beach clubs, amazing cenotes and jungle all around it, tons of water sport activities on its turquoise coastline, some of the most delicious local and international cuisines, and many more things.
And although you may be tempted to stay and get pampered in your beautiful hotel, you should make the effort and explore some of the amazing things to do in Tulum.
Tulum Beach or Downtown?
There are no all-inclusive hotels in Tulum, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Instead, you will find lots of adorable lodgings in this town, all with a unique charm and vibe of their own. So, let me tell you a little bit about the two main areas where they’re located.
The majority of lodgings in Tulum are located either in the hotel zone near the beach or in the downtown area, called the Pueblo, which is located on the highway about 10 kilometers away from the hotel zone.
Each of these two has its own charm and uniqueness.
The beach zone is a long strip of the best luxury hotels, fine dining restaurants, outdoor nightlife (beach and jungle parties), and lots of boutique shops.
The overall vibe of the beach zone is trendy and laid-back, and lodgings here are more expensive compared to the downtown area of Tulum, just because, well, they are not on the beach!
Below are my top picks for the best luxury hotels in Tulum’s beach zone.
In Down Town Tulum (or Tulum Centro) you can find a lot of great areas with trendy shops and restaurants, mainly in La Veleta or Aldea Zama. Prices are also relatively more affordable there.
If you have your own car, which is recommendable if you are staying in Down Town Tulum, you will be happy to learn that they have just opened and paved a brand new road from La Veleta neighborhood so if you are on that side of Tulum Centro you don’t have to drive through the unbearable traffic.

Best Luxury Hotels on Tulum Beach
1. Casa Malca
Casa Malca is a very unique all-suite boutique hotel on the beach strip of Tulum. The hotel is currently owned by Lio Malca, a renowned NY-based art dealer.
That’s one of the reasons the hotel is exceptionally artistic, with each suite offering a unique design and featuring artwork from the owner’s private collection.
It also features handmade furnishings, floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the sea (or in some cases the landscaped tropical gardens) outside, and a very chic vibe tinged with Mayan accents.
The hotel has 3 restaurants, an indoor pool, a couple of outdoor pools, and a beach club.
Guests also enjoy the artistic bar, doing sunset yoga on the rooftop terrace featuring sun loungers, bicycling to the nearby shops and some of the best restaurants in Tulum, and many others of the hotel’s amenities.
But what makes it so unique isn’t only limited to its luxuriousness or amazing art collection.
The place is famous for so many reasons, and being the former house of Pablo Escobar is on the top of that list.
Moreover, Casa Malca has been a host to celebrities like Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Drew Barrymore as well.
In terms of providing a luxurious stay, you will have a tough time finding any other accommodations that are more luxurious than Casa Malca.
Just keep one thing in mind although the hotel is children-friendly all year round, the place becomes adults-only around the time of Tulum’s EDM festivals (during the few weeks before and after New Year’s Eve).
Casa Malca stands right on the breezy white-sand coastline of Tulum (which means a private beach area for the guests) and offers a very enjoyable stay.
It is located at just a few minutes’ walk from the amazing Sian Ka’an Biosphere, and the Mayan Ruins of Tulum are also just 10 kilometers away from the hotel, while restaurants and watersport centers are all within a 10 km range as well.
2. Be Tulum
Be Tulum is another luxurious beachfront hotel in the beach zone, actually one of the first and the most popular.
The boutique hotel is a very stylish property overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, with a lush green jungle on its other side.
This tasteful combination of nature and architecture is a popular spa resort featuring contemporary suites and villas with a minimalist touch to them.
The combination may vary depending on the specific suit, but they feature plunge pools, private gardens, kitchens, indoor tubs, rooftop solarium and pools, balconies, along designer eco-chic furnishings combining modern with rustic pieces.
They also offer air-conditioning, free wifi, and iPod docks. However, there are no TVs in these suites.
The spa resort also has oceanfront and jungle-view villas with a variety of amenities.
These villas are entirely made in a nature-friendly way, with wooden furnishings and contemporary interior decor.
The amenities guests can avail of in these villas include personal concierge and chef services, airport transportation, and grocery shopping prior to their arrival.
Be Tulum is centered around nature and wellness.
To this end, apart from the eco-chic suites, the spa resort has a raw food bar, a yoga studio, meditation classes, and a healing sanctuary offering spa treatments along with pre-Hispanic rituals.
You can also try out the two other restaurants besides the raw food bar, one of which is dedicated to serving Mexican cuisine.
The beach bar is another one of Be Tulum’s well-liked places, but keep in mind that the hotel went completely cashless a couple of years ago, so you won’t be able to pay using cash in any of its bars and restaurants, which is very uncommon for Tulum, where it’s usually the opposite, cash only.
The hotel is located in the hotel zone, just a couple of kilometers away from the Ox Bel Ha cave system and 9 kilometers from the Tulum Archeological Site. It’s suitable for couples and families alike.
3. Jashita Hotel
Jashita Hotel is a mesmerizing hotel on a relatively private beach south of Tulum. The upscale property is surprisingly elegant, with refined rooms and an overall modern-day vibe to it, and all the guests are welcomed with complimentary wine and chocolates.
Even though Jashita Hotel is a beachside boutique with 30 rooms, it still packs a lot more than you would expect.
The rooms of Jashita Hotel are very spacious and boast modern interiors.
All of the rooms come with king-size four-poster beds and also have private terraces. Most of these rooms have plunge pools and hot tubs.
The honeymoon suites and penthouses of this hotel have private pools. The hotel itself has three different pools, one of which is for kids as well.
Other amenities include beachfront services, spa treatments including healing rituals, daily yoga classes, and the exclusive hotel restaurant with its delicious Mexican-Italian cuisine available any time of the day.
The long strip of private beach area offers great kayaking and snorkeling opportunities, and the gear for these is also easily available at Jashita Hotel.
Located on Soliman Bay, the hotel is in a very exclusive and remote area, which is actually located just outside Tulum.
Even though there’s not much nearby, you can have a very peaceful and relaxing vacation in this hotel.
It’s a family-friendly property with a dedicated pool for kids. Except, there isn’t much to explore nearby, so you will need a car rental to get around.
The Casa Cenote and Mayan ruins of Xelha port are just 10 and 7 kilometers from the hotel just like some of the most amazing beaches of the Riviera Maya are at a very close distance.
4. Ma’xanab Tulum
Ma’xanab is a relatively new addition in the luxury hotels of Tulum, but don’t let that make you think any less of it.
The hotel boasts a reputation for providing guests with one of the best stays in Tulum.
The 5-star hotel has fully air-conditioned rooms and all the other amenities to make your stay pleasurable.
The ambiance of this boutique hotel is very relaxing and laid-back, so it’s perfect for a peaceful retreat with direct access to the beach.
You won’t have to worry about noisy parties or too many crowds while enjoying the serene atmosphere of the hotel.
The hotel boasts an outdoor swimming pool and has a dedicated fitness center as well.
Moreover, its range of vegan foods alongside the delicious Mexican and international cuisine is a treat to the self.
Although, it’s worth mentioning here that the price for food and drinks is a tad bit higher, it’s justified by the taste and quality.
Ma’xanab is perfect for couples looking for a romantic excursion in one of Tulum’s most unforgettable nooks.
All the suites offer jungle or garden views, while the terrace garden of the hotel is a sight on its own.
Located in one of the best areas in Tulum, the hotel is just 150 meters from South Tulum Beach. The Tulum Archeological Site is just 10 kilometers from it, while the Tulum National Park is just 3 kilometers away.
Mezzanine is a very elegant boutique hotel along the Caribbean coastline of Tulum and is also a part of the Colibri Boutique Hotels Chain.
It consists of thatched-roof buildings with warmly decorated rooms, with a total of 9 rooms ranging between non-view and sea view settings and 2 master suites.
The fully air-conditioned rooms are furnished with natural wood and add polished concrete or tile flooring, making for a boho-chic vibe.
They also offer safes, minibars, yoga mats, and some of the upgraded rooms have coffee makers along with daily deliveries of tea/coffee baskets as well.
The suites have rainfall showers, soaking tubs, designer toiletries, Bluetooth speakers, and balconies offering stunning views of the sea. They also have lounge areas and private terraces overlooking the beach area of the hotel.
The open-air beachfront restaurant of the Mezzanine serves mouthwatering Thai cuisine. There is also an outdoor bar and a spa where guests can enjoy and relax, making the overall vibe of the Mezzanine Hotel very hip and stylish.
Situated on the northern side of the Tulum hotel zone, the Mezzanine is located next to Las Palmas Beach on the Caribbean.
It’s just 2 kilometers from the Mayan ruins of Tulum, and 8 kilometers from the Gran Cenote cavern.
Keep in mind that Mezzanine is an adults-only hotel and children are not permitted here.
So if you have anyone below the age of 16 with you, check out one of the family-friendly hotels on this list.
But if you’re a couple, then Mezzanine would be a great location for you.
Chiringuito is another relatively new addition to the beach resorts of Tulum.
The hotel is designed in a refreshing style, with simple but nicely-designed rooms boasting Mediterranean decor.
The trendy accents of these rooms add to the comfortable aura, making for a luxurious nest surrounded by Tulum’s lush jungle.
The rooms feature all the modern amenities of a comfy stay, including patios and coffee makers as well.
Some of the deluxe rooms and suites have rooftop terraces where you can spend the evening enjoying the breathtaking views of the sea, and private pools where you can take a dip in the refreshing water.
The Chiringuito features an infinity pool, a restaurant with outdoor dining, and a bar overlooking the sea.
Guests also have direct access to the private beach area of the hotel. Bike rentals are also provided so that guests can enjoy a ride in the stunning surroundings.
The overall experience of the Chiringuito is very unique and ideal for couples and groups alike.
The hotel is located next to a white-sand Caribbean beach lined with palm trees and surrounded by the forest.
The Cenote Cristal and Escondido are only a kilometer away from the property, and the Tulum Archeological Site is also only 2.3 kilometers from it.
7. La Zebra
La Zebra is one of the more upscale luxurious beach resorts in Tulum, with a variety of accommodations including ones with private pools and patios.
The breezy suites present a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere and they’re one of the most luxurious lodgings out there.
The suites offer minibars, decks or balconies, coffee machines, air conditioning, and daybeds. Some of the rooms have direct beach access or plunge pools as well.
All of the suites have king-size beds and can accommodate up to four people.
The whole hotel has so many areas to just sit back and relax.
The rooftop of La Zebra features a wonderful long pool along with a bar and a patio. The recreational activities and lodgings are fully designed to accommodate families, and the hotel also has a small rustic-chic spa and a playground for children.
The hotel has a spacious dining area featuring multiple bars, while its beachfront bar—the Mulberry Project—features various renowned guest bartenders from all around America serving great drinks, while the thatched-roof restaurant offers various delicious local cuisines.
Specialties include the Chef’s Table, which is an 8-course dining experience consisting of Mexican cuisine.
You can also enjoy the free weekly dance lessons every Sunday, where all are welcome to participate in the salsa night with live music.
The property is a family-friendly boutique hotel located on the southern side of the Tulum beach zone, with some of Tulum’s best restaurants and bars within walking distance.
8. Mi Amor – Adults Only
Mi Amor is an adults-only boutique hotel on Tulum beach, featuring air-conditioning, private terraces, and plunge pools along with all the signature amenities of the Colibri Boutique Hotels chain. The rooms are tastefully designed with couples in mind and are very refined with their minimalist interiors.
The colorfully fun decor of these rooms incites a very unique feeling within the guests while making for comfortable lodging in this luxurious haven, so you can rest assured that your stay will be an elegant one.
There is no TV in the room, but you won’t be missing it, I promise.
In fact, the room is furnished with all the most modern amenities and facilities to keep you entertained. From furnished patios or balconies, wooden floors, rain showers, and minibars to stereo sound systems, free wifi, and Nespresso machines, these rooms include everything for your comfort.
All of the rooms feature king-size beds and private terraces, and hot tubs or sea views. The ones on the ground floors add private plunge pools as well.
But if your room doesn’t have a private pool, you can take a dip in the infinity pool at the center of the hotel.
And while you’re at it, there’s also a French-Italian restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows where you can enjoy a delicious meal enjoying the views outside, or you can try the lovely terrace.
There is also a cocktail bar that serves some of the most amazing drinks, and guests also have direct access to the romantic setting of the private white-sand beach of Mi Amor.
Moreover, the hotel’s cozy spa offers various treatments and healing therapies as well. Suffice to say, the lovely atmosphere and romantic vibe of Mi Amor hotel make couples fall in love anew.
The hotel is located in the north beach zone, nestled on a rocky cliff in the tropical forest of Tulum, right beside the Caribbean coastline.
As the name implies, the hotel is the perfect place for couples going on honeymoon or simply looking for a memorable trip in the Riviera Maya.
Apart from many of Tulum’s quality bars and restaurants, the Tulum National Park is also within walking distance from the hotel. One of Tulum’s most famous beaches, the Playa Paraiso, is also just a short walk from Mi Amor.
Sanara, the meaning of which is ‘you will heal’, is a hotel with one of the most exceptional atmospheres you will find anywhere in Tulum.
The barefoot chic boutique hotel has been conceived around the concept of total healing and nourishment of the mind and body.
All of the rooms feature air-conditioning, and some also have minifridges, coffee makers, and kitchenettes, and/or sofa beds.
Additionally, you will have access to private gardens, and terraces/balconies offering views of the azure blue waters or the lush green jungle.
You can also book the 3-bedroom villa of Sanara, which features a gorgeous downstairs master bedroom suite, a large private living and dining area, and a second two-bedroom suite. It’s suitable for both families and couples.
Hotel guests staying at the beachside villas are also provided access to the chic bed getaway at the private beach area of the property, where they can unwind and relax by the comforting waves of the ocean, along with a variety of activities like diving, windsurfing, and snorkeling.
The Real Coconut restaurant of Sanara was created by the hotel’s co-founder Daniella Hunter, an enthusiastic environmentalist with a love for beaches and healthy food.
The healing-focused restaurant is known throughout the world for its nourishing plant-based recipes free of gluten, dairy, and grain.
Sanara also has a dedicated oceanfront yoga studio with international instructors where you can take classes.
The wellness center offers holistic healing programs and rejuvenating spa treatments for hotel guests.
Sanara is located on Tulum Beach and overlooks the white-sand coastline of the Caribbean.
It’s also just 8 kilometers from the Tulum Archeological Site.
Just like Sanara, Nomade is another wellness-centered hotel in the beach zone of Tulum featuring upscale permanent tents with outdoor showers, rustic-chic rooms, and suites with air-conditioning along with luxury villas.
It’s exceptionally appealing among couples on a vacation.
The rooms offer views of the sea or the private gardens, while the deluxe suites also provide terrace access and second bedrooms.
The villas feature private gardens, and some have private pools as well. All the hotel guests have access to the private beach area of the hotel.
The hotel is themed around Mayan culture, with both the interiors and activities carrying the vibe.
The spa features a hammam, sauna, and indoor and outdoor plunge pools, and offers healing treatments along with Mayan healing rituals.

You can also take yoga classes and go for a ride on bikes provided by the hotel.
The hotel is situated near Tulum Beach, with the Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve just a 10-minute walk from it, while the Tulum Archeological Site is around 10 kilometers and the National Park just 5 kilometers away.

The Nest Tulum is a very popular entry on my list and has been featured in many magazines for its stylish designs and magical setting. The architecture of the hotel reflects the spirituality and traditions of Mayan culture in all its aspects.
The minimalist design of the rustic-chic rooms is complete with patios and terraces offering views of the gardens, sea, or the surrounding forest.
The bedroom suites include sitting areas, soaking tubs, and sleeping lofts.
The 4-bedroom villa offered by Nest was originally built in 1996 as a private beachfront house for a family.
After a detailed remodeling in 2018, it still preserves the homey vibe of the place and includes a kitchen, gardens, outdoor patio, and a large palapa terrace.
Guests have direct access to the private beach area, where an oceanfront restaurant and a bar serve delicious meals and drinks.
You can also attend tasting workshops and take cooking classes during your stay in the Nest.
Since the Nest is an adults-only hotel, it’s only suitable for groups and perfect for couples.
There are tons of trendy shops and cafes at a distance of 10-11 kilometers from the hotel, which you can visit using loaner bikes provided by the hotel.
12. La Valise
La Valise is another popular luxury hotel on this list with sophisticated architecture depicting fine craftsmanship and charm. The property consists of eleven elegantly furnished rooms nestled between the jungle and the Caribbean.
All the rooms of La Valise are very gorgeously designed with artistic furnishings. These seafront rooms also have amenities like air-conditioning, tea and coffee makers, safes, and also add en suite bathrooms or hammocks, open-air showers, and terraces.
The restaurant at La Valise offers jungle views along with its delicious Mexican and Mayan cuisine. Direct access to the private beach area means enjoying your drinks and meals relaxing in the beach beds, or on the terrace garden of the restaurant which features live music in the evenings.
The hotel guests can take complimentary yoga classes every Friday, enjoy a swim in the heated infinity pool with views of the jungle and the ocean, and try the relaxing treatments offered by the spa.
Both La Valise and the Nest are part of the same chain of hotels, but La Valise is children-friendly and incredibly popular among couples.
The hotel is placed in a cozy little area of the Tulum forest in the hotel zone which overlooks the Caribbean.
Even though Tulum is overall a more expensive place to stay compared to the other Riviera Maya destinations and Cancun, you can find some great budget options in the Pueblo.
But rest assured, despite the lower accommodation prices, the downtown area has its own charm.
You will find lots of budget restaurants, shops, and boutique hotels, along with lovely coffee bars and nightclubs right in the downtown area.
But what truly sets it apart is the authentic Mexican charm that is found here.
The town center is about 10 kilometers away from the beach zone, located right on the highway. If you’re staying in the downtown hotels, your options for getting to the beach are plenty, including driving there, taking a taxi or bike, or even walking the 45-minute distance on foot.
So, with that out of the way, here are some of my fave places to stay in the downtown area of Tulum.
13. Hotel Bardo – Adults Only
The first downtown hotel on my list is an adults-only eco-chic lodging right off the elegant boutique hotel consisting of sophisticated villas surrounded by the refreshing greenery of Tulum’s jungle.
All the rooms of Hotel Bardo offer a romantic setting, with a private plunge pool and jungle surroundings. All rooms are also equipped with a, fridge, coffee machine, air-conditioning, and have an additional seating area as well.
The room service is fantastic, and you will find the accommodations and environment worth a 5-star review.
The hotel also features a large outdoor swimming pool and an eco-chic open-air bar with a lounge. All the guests also have access to the terrace of the hotel, offering views of the expansive jungle area surrounding it.
Its thatched-roof restaurant is constructed of natural materials and has plenty of little plants in it as well.
The quality of the food here is really nice, the menus consist of a variety of foods and the cuisine is focused on replenishing the body with food prepared using freshest locally-sourced ingredients.
Apart from its lovely garden, the hotel also has a sauna, called Temazcal, a sound healing room, a spa, and offers its guests yoga classes as well.
Hotel Bardo is located in the outskirts of downtown Tulum, but the town center is just a few minutes of walk away from it.
Don’t worry if the first entry on my list is not suitable for you because of being adults-only, this one is another highly recommended boutique hotel in the Pueblo of Tulum and it’s also family-friendly.
This luxury hotel, of the same property as Bardo, is its family-friendly version and consists of studios and bedroom suites with a capacity of up to 8 people.
The suites offer kitchenettes and outdoor showers, while some also have outdoor tubs, and the 3-bedroom suites have private plunge pools as well.
The villas have terraces or balconies with views of the surrounding jungle and hotel gardens. Guests are also provided with in-room yoga and massage service.
The hotel also offers swims in the gorgeous outdoor pool, and bicycles to explore the town center.
The beautiful design and variety of rooms make this hotel one of the best places for families to stay.
14. Orchid House
Owned by a group of wanderlusts and travelers, Orchid House is one of the boutique hotels of Tulum which focuses on providing guests a homey experience.
The hotel is a luxurious property with air-conditioned rooms, surrounded by palm trees, orchids, and abundant wildlife.
The decor of suites in Orchid House aims to combine nature and art, making for an exquisite stay right in the middle of a refreshing environment.
The rooms also have modern facilities like flat-screen TVs, coffee machines, wifi, and have terrace access as well.
The atmosphere of Orchid House is very relaxing and refreshing, and with gorgeous suites featuring a king-size bed for two guests each, the hotel is perfect for couples.
The master suite can accommodate up to 4, so groups can also make their stay here.
Orchid House features a restaurant, an outdoor pool, and a bar. The hotel also provides paid shuttle service for Cancun International Airport.
The room service is pretty good, and there is a 24-hour front desk where guests can get tours organized for them.
But even if you don’t want to have your tours organized by others, Paradise Beach is only a couple of kilometers away, while the Tulum Archeological Site is around 6 kilometers from the hotel.
15. Hotel Chaca
Hotel Chaca provides a similar experience compared to Orchid House in many ways, but one of the main differences is that it’s a family-friendly hotel.
Surrounded by nature, this boutique hotel is a tranquil and refreshing place to stay in the downtown area.
The hotel features elegantly-furnished “casitas”, which means little houses.
The interior of these rooms is a curious mix of sophistication and Mayan culture.
The rooms are all air-conditioned, have free wifi in them, and come with a seating area.
The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool, a restaurant, a bar, and features a lovely garden as well. The restaurant serves a la carte and an American breakfast along with local cuisine.
The hotel also has a sun terrace, themed dinner nights, and offers walking tours. However, this hotel is not exactly in Tulum, but on the way to Coba, in a small village called Uh May, which is becoming more and more popular among expatriates looking to move away from busy Tulum.
In this case, I would suggest you should rent a car for your entire stay so that you will be more flexible to move around.
16. Zenses Wellness and Spa
Zenses Wellness and Spa is a one-of-a-kind resort in the Tulum Pueblo with an amazing architectural design. The property is a gorgeous combination of nature and comfort, with a colorful and vivid atmosphere.
The hotel is adults-only and features a deluxe suite ideal for couples.
The rooms are large and spacious, each one feeling like a separate bungalow, and they all feature televisions with cable channels, air-conditioning, amazing room service, a seating area, and free wifi.
There is an outdoor pool in the hotel, along with a restaurant and a bar.
You can also take yoga classes, get spa treatments, take one of the bikes they provide and go for a ride, or simply stroll in the garden for a relaxing time with nature all around you.
The hotel also provides paid pick-and-drop service for the airport, and it’s located just 1.4 kilometers from the Tulum Bus Station.
There are plenty of nice restaurants and bars near the property, and you can get the front desk to book tickets or arrange tours for you.
Well, that’s about it for today. Now that you know the best luxury hotels in Tulum, all that’s left is to book your stay in the one you liked the most and pack your things for one of the most unforgettable vacations in the Quintana Roo.
And that is the end of my favorite luxury hotels in Tulum. Let me know if you have any questions and also if you happen to book one of them I would love to hear your thoughts! Happy travels!
