How to get from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen

Transportation from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen can be tricky if you don’t know how to move around, especially because at your arrival the first thing you see is a bunch of people dressed in professional-looking uniforms offering you transfers but in reality, they are selling a timeshare, so make sure you avoid those. It’s never a deal (at least for you).

Read on for your best options.

1. 🚌 ADO bus from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen

ADO busses offer the cheapest way to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, and you find rides from 8 am to 10 pm at almost every hour or 40 minutes.

You can check out the ADO schedule here and book online. However, I would not recommend that just in case your flight is delayed.

Prices listed are approximate for 2026. Always check the current fare on the ADO website before traveling, as prices adjust periodically.

How to find the ADO bus at Cancun Airport

► As soon as you clear customs just before getting out of the airport you will see different booths, mainly for car rentals, and tours.

The ADO booth will be among them and if you don’t find it you can just ask around and they will point it to you.

►You can purchase the ticket right there or on the bus directly.

► Sometimes there is no agent available, so you can just get out of the airport and get straight to the bus stop and purchase the ticket on the bus.

If you can’t find it ask the tour reps waiting for their clients just outside the airport and they will point you in the right direction.

► One-way ticket for the ADO bus ride to Playa del Carmen from Cancun Airport is 208 MXN pesos (about 10 USD)

► ADO  is the cheapest way of getting from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun, or Merida.

ADO fleet has modern buses equipped with AC and TV although very often it’s too loud and with low-quality movies or soap operas, obviously in Spanish, and the a/c is freaking cold.

They are super safe and they store your luggage beneath the bus, with overhead compartments for your small bags, although I always recommend keeping your personal belongings on your lap and never out of sight.

2. Private transportation or taxi from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen

Cancun playa del Carmen transfer

Cancun to Playa del Carmen private transportation is not the cheapest way to get to the destination but it’s definitely faster and more comfortable, besides being the safest one.

You have to know that transportation from Cancun airport is regulated and you need to have a special permit to be able to operate at the airport. So only authorized taxis or private companies can offer the service.

Therefore, I would recommend choosing private transportation with a trustworthy company versus a random taxi for the following reasons:

👉🏽 No matter how late is your flight, there will be somebody with your name on a board waiting for you outside the airport

👉🏽 They normally have better rates starting from 60USD and they offer different kinds of services and you don’t have to negotiate the price as you would have to do with taxis

👉🏽 They offer more personalized and professional service and an English-speaking guide

3. Getting a shuttle from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen

Cancun airport shuttle is a widespread way to get to Playa del Carmen with an average cost not as cheap as the ADO bus but less expensive than private transportation.

I partner with Get your Guide, which offers various options, including shared transportation from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen.

They usually include a door-to-door service with rates starting from 300 pesos.

How to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun downtown

The best way to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun downtown is either by ADO bus or Colectivos. They are both located in the same area. See the map below.

ADO bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen vs Colectivos

The ADO bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is slightly more expensive than the colectivos and a little safer, according to many, just because the colectivo drivers are not shy when it comes to speed. ADO buses are bigger, and they take a little extra time to get to the destination.

They have a specific schedule which you can find here on the ADO website where you can book your trip in advance. The fare varies according to the different times of the day.

ADO Fare – from 65 to 85 MXN (approx. 3 to 4.5 USD)

Also, the ADO busses would stop only at the terminal ADO in Playa del Carmen, which is by the Quinta Avenida in the heart of Playa, whereas the collectivos can stop wherever you ask them along their route, of course.

Colectivo Fare – around 45 MXN (2USD approx.)

There are two kinds of colectivos though:

PLAYA EXPRESS: Depart right in front of the ADO Terminal entrance.

REGULAR COLECTIVO: departing from the little plaza behind the Soriana Super, (as indicated on the map here below)

How to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

Getting from Cancun to Playa del Carmen by taxi

You can get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun downtown by taxi but I would recommend you negotiate the rate beforehand.

It shouldn’t be more than 1000 MXN (50 USD), sometimes cheaper.

It’s best if you know somebody (maybe at your hotel) who suggests a trustworthy taxi driver or if you have used a taxi before and you found somebody particularly nice and you might want to ask for his/her number and call them when you need them. I normally do that.

Using the Tren Maya from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen

The Tren Maya is a modern passenger train that connects Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen and is the newest option for this journey. However, there are important practical details you need to know before choosing this option.

Where is the Tren Maya Station?

The Tren Maya station is NOT inside the airport terminal. It is located on the Federal Highway 180, a minutes drive from Cancun International Airport. It is not walkable from the terminal. You need to take a shuttle bus from the airport to the station before boarding the train.

How to Get from the Airport Terminal to the Tren Maya Station

A shuttle bus runs between the airport terminals and the Tren Maya station. You can buy your shuttle ticket at the ADO stand on the bus platform outside the terminal for approximately 35 MXN. Pay in cash as cards are not always accepted.

The shuttle departs from the same platform area as the ADO buses. Look for a bus marked with Tren Maya livery. Allow significant time for this connection: the total process of exiting the terminal, catching the shuttle, and reaching the station takes approximately one hour and 15 minutes from Terminal 3 and one hour and 30 minutes from Terminal 4.

Buy your train tickets in advance through the official Tren Maya app or website before you land, ideally while waiting at the baggage carousel connected to the airport free wifi. The kiosks at the station are frequently unstaffed.

Journey Time and Schedule

The Tren Maya from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen takes approximately 35 to 40 minutes on the train itself. However when you add the shuttle transfer time the total journey from terminal to Playa del Carmen station is significantly longer than taking the ADO bus directly.

As of 2026 the Tren Maya runs approximately four to six times per day between Cancun Airport and Playa del Carmen. This is far less frequent than the ADO bus, which runs approximately every 30 minutes. Always check the current schedule on the official Tren Maya website or app before you travel as schedules are still being updated as more trains enter service.

Tren Maya Prices 2026

A ticket from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen costs approximately 60 to 130 MXN depending on class. The shuttle bus from the airport terminal to the station costs an additional 35 MXN.

Is the Tren Maya Worth It for the Cancun to Playa del Carmen Journey?

Honestly for this specific short journey the ADO bus is more practical for most travelers. The ADO bus runs far more frequently, departs directly from the airport terminal without an additional shuttle transfer, and drops you right on Quinta Avenida in central Playa del Carmen. The Tren Maya station in Playa del Carmen also requires a taxi to reach the town center.

The Tren Maya makes much more sense for longer journeys such as Cancun Airport to Tulum, Valladolid, Chichen Itza, or Merida, where the train experience and reduced road journey time offer a genuine advantage.

Tren Maya Pros and Cons for This Route

Pros: Scenic and modern, cheap, a genuinely interesting experience, good value for longer journeys continuing beyond Playa del Carmen.

Cons: Station is not inside the airport and requires a shuttle transfer adding significant time, runs only four to six times per day, Playa del Carmen station requires a taxi to town center, kiosks at the station are frequently unmanned so you must book in advance online.

Rental Car from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

Renting a car at Cancun Airport is the best option if you plan to explore the Riviera Maya at your own pace, visit cenotes, ruins, and beaches between cities, and are comfortable driving in Mexico.

The drive from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen follows Highway 307 south, a well-maintained dual carriageway with good signage. The drive takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes without stops.

Use Discover Cars to compare rental prices across multiple companies and find the best all-in rate. Always confirm that full insurance is included and read the policy carefully regarding additional charges.

In my detailed article on renting a car in Mexico, I explain in detail where to find the best car rental options and what to look for when you pick one.

Practical driving tips for this route:

Watch for topes (speed bumps) at every town and village along Highway 307 including Puerto Morelos. They appear without warning and can damage your vehicle if hit at speed.

Toll roads along this stretch require payment in cash pesos. Keep small notes available.

Petrol stations are plentiful along Highway 307, but in rural areas further south, they become scarce. Fill up whenever you drop to half a tank. Read more about driving in Mexico in my dedicated post.

Getting from the Cancun Hotel Zone to Playa del Carmen

If you are staying in the Cancun hotel zone (Zona Hotelera) rather than downtown or at the airport, the journey to Playa del Carmen requires an extra step.

By ADO bus: The ADO bus stops at four points in the hotel zone: Zona Hotelera Plaza Fiesta, Playa la Fiesta, Museo Maya, and Aquaworld, and then continues to the airport and on to Playa del Carmen. If you are staying near one of these stops this is a convenient and cheap option. If your hotel is not near a stop you will need a taxi to the nearest ADO stop first.

By private transfer: The most practical hotel zone option. Pre-book a private transfer from your hotel directly to Playa del Carmen. Rates from hotel zone properties are slightly higher than from the airport due to the distance. This is the option I recommend for hotel zone travelers as it eliminates all transfers.

By taxi: Taxis are available at every hotel in the zone. Agree on the price before getting in. A taxi from the hotel zone to Playa del Carmen typically costs 900 to 1,400 MXN depending on which part of the zone you are departing from.

By colectivo: Colectivos do not serve the hotel zone directly. You would need to take the city bus (Route R1, approximately 12 MXN) from the hotel zone to downtown Cancun first, then take a colectivo from the ADO terminal area. The total cost is approximately 70 MXN, but the total time is approximately two and a half hours. Only practical for travelers with no luggage who are not in a hurry.

Neither Uber nor DiDi operates in the Cancun hotel zone.

How to get from Playa del Carmen to Cancun Airport

From Playa del Carmen to Cancun Airport Shuttle (Private).

They offer a private service and come and pick you up at your hotel at your desired time, with an English-speaking driver for a seamless service.

Getting from Playa del Carmen to Cancun Airport by ADO bus

From Playa del Carmen bus station (on the 5th Av.) there are scheduled busses (ADO) going to the Airport at a specific time.

They are usually reliable although I always suggest calculating a good margin of time from your scheduled flight, just in case, and booking your seat in advance.

You can do it online from the ADO website.

From Playa del Carmen to Cancun Airport by Taxi

If you have been in Playa del Carmen for a while during your vacation, you might have met nice taxi drivers with whom you have established a good relationship, and they have taken you around, maybe even on tours.

Getting from Playa del Carmen to Cancun Downtown

How to get from Playa del Carmen to Cancun Downtown by Colectivos

Just like on the way from Cancún to Playa del Carmen, you have the two options for the colectivos (shared shuttle service):

Playa Express: They are minivans leaving from Calle 2 between 20th and 25th Avenues from their parking lot.

They leave on a regular basis during the day and will leave even if not full.

There is also a new pickup spot at the ADO bus station on 20th Avenue and 12th Street.

Their terminal is right in front of the ADO bus terminal in Cancun although they can drop you off anywhere you wish along their route.

Regular minivan – a little smaller than the Playa Express, they leave from the corner of 2nd Street and 20th Avenue.

There is a parking lot at the northeast corner of the intersection where they will be yelling out “Cancun”.

Their terminal is close to the ADO station, besides the Soriana super, as indicated in the above map.

How to get from Playa del Carmen to Cancun downtown by ADO bus

In Playa del Carmen, there are two ADO bus stations. The one on 5th Avenue is the terminal for local buses that run around the Yucatan peninsula, and that’s where you would get your bus to Cancun.

Check on the ADO website for schedules and prices and to make a reservation.

Is there UBER in Cancun or Playa del Carmen?

DiDi and Uber operate in Cancun and are genuine options for getting around the city but with limitations.

Neither Uber nor DiDi operates at Cancun Airport. App-based ride services cannot pick up at the airport terminal. Your options from the airport remain private transfer, ADO bus, or the official airport taxi desk as mentioned in this article.

Neither Uber nor DiDi operates in the Cancun hotel zone. For the full Cancun to Playa del Carmen journey, you cannot rely on either app, regardless of your departure point. The options covered in this guide are your practical alternatives.
