The 13 Best Hotels in Merida Mexico for Luxury and Mid-range Budgets

Excited about your trip to Merida? I am sure you are, but to make your trip even more perfect you should find the perfect place to stay as well.

And if you are picky about hotels like I am and you wish to stay in one of the most charming hotels in Merida this post is for you.

I have selected the cutest places that celebrate the gorgeous colonial architecture combined with the most modern amenities and, of course, comfort.

Merida is a cultural hub for the Mayan heritage, and its historical center is an open-air museum.

Merida receives many tourists because of its amazingly diverse architecture, its art, and delicious Yucatecan food.

In fact, away from the almost exclusively touristy cities like Cancun and Tulum, Merida offers a great number of authentic Mexican attractions—earning the title of the Cultural Capital of the Americas.

Being one of the most exotic cities in Mexico, and a refreshing break from the countless beach towns, there are quite a bit of interesting things to do in Merida and its surroundings.

Merida plaza aerial view at sunset

This authentic vibe of Merida is made even better with amazing museums, top-notch bars, day trips to Mayan ruins, and great beaches just half an hour away, cenotes, historic haciendas turned into some of the best hotels, and a lot of Mayan culture along with the international and, most of all, Mexican cuisine.

Staying in a hotel that is in line with the authentic Yucatecan atmosphere makes your trip even more incredible. This is why I put together a list of hotels that suit the purpose.

But before moving on with the list of the best hotels in Merida, let’s find out which is the best area to stay in Merida.

In fact, although Merida is one of the safest places in Mexico, some of the neighborhoods are indeed not recommendable while others are your best option. Let’s find out which ones.

Merida Mexico Paseo Montejo

The best area to stay in Merida

The best area to stay in Merida is hands down its downtown area, but only the historic center and Paseo Montejo areas there let you experience what it’s like to lodge in the best hotels of Merida.

So, I’ll only tell you about Merida hotels from these two areas, and you can choose your pick for the one that best suits you and your budget.

The Historical Center of Merida (or Centro) is one of the most lively areas of the city. Its main square overlooks the Merida Cathedral, and there are tons of restaurants, museums, and historic monuments within the area (hence the name).

Merida Plaza Mexico

Just a short distance from the Centro, Paseo Montejo is another popular area of Merida, famous for its stunning architecture, historic buildings, and breathtaking beauty.

The avenue is named after Francisco de Montejo, the Spanish conquistador who founded Merida city.

It was created mimicking the Champs Elisee, to reflect the economic success of the city back in the 1880s, and some grand structures from that period are now open as luxurious boutique hotels or luxurious private mansions.

Besides staying there, walking around and visiting these areas are definitely some of the things to do in Merida during your trip.

Best hotels in Merida Mexico – luxury

1. Hacienda Xcanatun

Just a couple of minutes from Federal Highway 281, Hacienda Xcanatun is one of the small luxury hotels of Merida, perfect for a very memorable stay in the city. The place is rated highly for couples, but families are also accommodated here, with no children or pet restrictions.

This renovated 18th Century hacienda boasts some of the most luxurious facilities. The rooms are very spacious, clean, and comfy. They feature marble flooring, air-conditioning, and contemporary decors.

There are a total of 4 suites, each one featuring an extra-large double bed, hydromassage bathtubs, and hammocks, along with the usual amenities of a 5-star lodging like iPod docking, Wi-Fi connectivity, air-conditioning etc. The lounges also have flat-screen TVs with Netflix and Chromecast support.

The hotel has an on-site restaurant, called Casa de Piedra, which serves delicious local Mexican cuisine, and a delightful blend of French cuisine with Yucatán ingredients. You can dine indoors, outdoors, or order room service in the comfort of your suite.

The outside veranda of this restaurant is worth having lunch or dinner in, because the ambiance there is just superb. The bar and outside seating overlooking the hotel’s gardens are also pretty nice. The prices for its à la carte menu are very affordable and pack the best value, considering how amazing the food is.

Hacienda Xcanatun also boasts two large outdoor pools, which are almost never crowded, so you will probably have them to yourself during your stay here.

Since the hotel is surrounded by breathtaking nature, a swim in one of these pools is highly recommended—you will feel immersed in authentic Yucatán vibes.

There are a variety of other things that make Hacienda Xcanatun stand out. These include the cooking classes, yoga sessions, the free guided tour, walking tours, sun terrace, live music, and the well-known spa center.  The spa offers world-class wellness treatments, which I definitely recommend trying out.

The Hacienda Xcanatun is well-liked for its ideal location. Just a 5-minute drive from the famous Dzibilchaltun ruins of Merida, many other attractions like the Mayan World Museum, Mérida Convention Center, and Galeras Mérida Shopping Center are all within a 15-minute drive of Hacienda Xcanatun.

7. Merida Santiago Hotel Boutique

An elegant and sophisticated boutique hotel, Merida Santiago is a jewel in the Historic Center of Merida. The hotel consists of 6 suites of different sizes, layouts, and uniquely crafted interiors and decorations.

Merida Santiago Hotel is a very upscale lodging, so its central location in the city definitely qualifies it as one of the best hotels in Merida Mexico.

The King Suite overlooks the pool and features an outside sitting area with garden chairs, and the King Room Deluxe is all of that but more spacious.

The Suite with Spa and Bath has a nice hammock that many guests like, and the Superior Suite has a balcony where you won’t get enough of the peaceful evening breeze while enjoying the views of the courtyard.

If you want the best of both these suites, the Superior Suite with Spa Bath is where you will get it.

There is also a hammock, outdoor furniture, and terrace lights to make the suite more kingly.

Just like the rest of my picks for the best hotels in Merida Mexico, all the suites in Merida Santiago feature air-conditioning, walk-in showers, smart TVs, high-speed Wi-Fi, and every other facility of a comfortable stay.

Santiago also has a large pool, and the restaurant offers a wonderful gastronomic experience for its guests with amazing food and drinks. You can also take cooking classes during your stay here.

8. Coqui Coqui

Coqui Coqui

Coqui Coqui is a very unique entry on my list of the best hotels in Merida, because, unlike the other ones, it has a history in a very different niche. Coqui Coqui was originally a perfumery before it became part of the Coqui Coqui boutique hotels group.

It’s a colonial-era house from the 1900s nevertheless, so you will still find it very atmospheric and culture-rich. The one-suite lodging is a mark of decadence with its variety of services and upscale design.

The huge suite is decorated very nicely and features an open living room, a terrace, and even a pool on the rooftop.

The interiors of this suite are the definition of luxury, boasting two French bathtubs complementing the experience of its wrought-iron bed, burgundy upholstery, rich velvet drapes, and antique mirrors.

Apart from the signature perfumery of Coqui Coqui, offering an array of fragrances and scents, the hotel features a spa salon proposing a wide range of treatments, a boutique with an amazing variety of curated clothes, housewares, and travel essentials, and it also has a café where the coffee is just perfect.

Gastronomy is also a huge focus at Coqui Coqui where you can try delicious dishes and products inspired by the traditional Yucatecan cuisine and prepared with fresh produce from their organic farm.

Furthermore, if you feel like shopping, at Coqui Coqui boutique you can find an array of exquisite accessories such as hammocks, bags, and hats created by local artisans with 100% Mexican fibers and materials such as suede, wood, pure cotton, and sansevieria.

The Union is an elegant suite with colonial-style tiling, a private bathroom, and a lush king bed. The Colonial is a suite all about capturing the historic heritage of Merida and features a wrought-iron bed, a spacious lounge area, and Colonial-style decors.

The Capital is a suite more focused on contemporary luxuries, so its decor highlights a very hip and relaxing atmosphere. Along with the walk-in closet, the private bathroom offers a large rain shower, dual sinks, and organic amenities made with local money.

The Frontier is every bit as good as the Capital with similar features, but it also offers views of the courtyard pool, which translate to memorable evenings spent chilling out in your suite after having a blast exploring the wonderful city of Merida.
