Rainfall in Cabo during May ranges between an average of 0.03 inches of rain (1mm) to 0.2 inches of rain (7mm) throughout the entire month.

While this lack of precipitation can be disappointing for some tourists looking for a rainy climate and lush greenery, many others look forward to spending their days out on the beach or enjoying other outdoor activities without having to worry about getting wet.

If you fall in the latter group, good news! You’ll have all the sunshine your heart desires, speaking of which…

Cabo San Lucas in Mexico is a stunning destination for travelers anytime of the year, but especially during the month of May.

During this time, vacationers can experience an average of 13 daylight hours, out of which 12 hours (on average) will have perfect sunshine.

The sun-soaked days with 10+ hours of sunshine create an ideal environment for outdoor activities like swimming, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, and more.

Couples will find romance along the beachfront as they watch the sunset over the horizon together at nightfall.

It’s also one of the best months for family travel, with lots of opportunities to enjoy relaxing by one of many resort pools with a cold drink in hand while their kids splash around enjoying every minute of what Cabo has to offer.

Shopping destinations are also abundant with plenty of souvenirs to bring home from your tropical getaway.

Sea water temperature

The beautiful beaches of Cabo have long been a favorite destination for tourists and locals alike, especially during the summer months.

May is no exception, with the average sea temperature at 74.3°F (23.5°C). This temperature is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities in the crystal-clear waters of this popular Mexican resort town.

The ocean temperature is not too warm, nor too cold. It may feel a bit cool at first, but you can stay in the water as long as you like without feeling uncomfortable.

Sargassum Seaweed in Cabo in May

Sargassum seaweed has been plaguing the beaches on the Atlantic side of Mexico during the summer months.

It piles up on the beaches of Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, etc. and many people find it unpleasant, not just the sight but also the smell.

Luckily, Cabo doesn’t have that issue. It’s situated on the other side of the country, and the Pacific side of Mexico doesn’t have the seaweed issue.

So no matter which month you visit, you don’t have to worry about sargassum ruining your beach days. The beaches of Cabo remain as picturesque as ever throughout the year.

Events in Cabo in May

🎖️🎉 Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated on the fifth of May. This holiday commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862.

However, due to its location within Baja California Sur state and its distance from Puebla where this battle took place, locals in Cabo don’t celebrate this day.

The most you’ll see is some hotels hosting events with music, drink specials, and food on May 5th for their American tourists.

Pros of Visiting Cabo in May

✅ Technically the peak season is over in May, but the temperatures will still be comfortable and sunny. May falls in the shoulder seasons in Cabo, before the rainy season starts in July, and plenty of people visit the area in this month.

You can enjoy the perfect weather of Cabo, and everything the Los Cabos area has to offer, without the large crowds of the high season.

✅ The water temperature is perfect, and, with 12 hours of average sunshine per day, there’s almost no rain throughout the whole month to ruin your beach days or other plans.

✅ May is the month that comes after Spring Breakers are gone and the high season is over with the previous month, but still a couple of months before the rainy season of Cabo. It’s a good month for a laid-back vacation in Cabo with fewer crowds and the perfect weather for beach days.

✅ Since May is a shoulder season month, it’s one of the best times of year to score good deals on top of the low room rates and cheaper prices to make your vacation more pocket-friendly.

✅ There’s a huge variety of activities available such as surfing, snorkeling, fishing, and more.

Cons of Visiting Cabo in May

👎 On a handful of days, the temperature can reach 90°F (32°C). Combined with the intense sunlight and sometimes high humidity, it can feel quite hot on those days. Luckily, those days are few and far in between.

👎 The whale watching season is over by the time May rolls around. If your plan is to swim with whale sharks or humpback whales, you’ll have to visit between mid-December to mid-April. Don’t get disheartened, though, you can still have fun while snorkeling. (See below)

👎 Technically, hurricane season in Cabo starts in mid-May. But this is barely a con as the tropical storms don’t usually affect the area until late August or September, if at all. This is still worth mentioning as you should always check weather forecasts before visiting.

Is Cabo too hot in May?

Cabo isn’t too hot during May. There might be 2-3 days in the whole month where the temperature during the day might react to 92°F (33.4°C), but those are rare.

Most of the time, the temperature during the day will hover between 80-86°F (26.7-30°C), which is quite enjoyable.

Things cool down significantly at night, and with an average temperature of 70°F (21.1°C) they’re great for going out and enjoying Cabo’s vibrant nightlife.

Is Cabo busy in May?

Cabo isn’t nearly as busy in May as it is during the winter months, also known as the high season (mid-December to mid-April), but you’ll still see crowds.

The area also isn’t nearly as devoid of tourists as during the low season.

That being said, if your main goal is to enjoy Cabo with its great weather and take part in activities without high prices and large crowds, then May is a great month to take a summer vacation in Cabo.

Can you swim in Cabo in May?

Sure thing! With an ocean temperature of 74.3°F (23.5°C), the waters around Cabo are very enjoyable to swim in; neither too warm nor too cold.

Should I go to Mexico in May?

Traveling to Mexico in May is a great idea if you’re looking for sunny days and warm temperatures.

The rainy season is yet to arrive, in most of the country there’s little chance of rain and the average temperature sits between 21°C (70°F) and 30°C (86°F).

In places like Mexico City, it even gets chilly at night with lows of 55°F (12°C).

Is Cabo humid in May?

Most days in May will have a humidity level of around 60% which is quite comfortable.

However, you might experience anywhere from 1 to 4 muggy days in the whole month of May when the humidity will get as high as 80-85%.

Since those are pretty rare, I’d say humidity shouldn’t deter you from enjoying Cabo during May.

Medano Beach front Cabo San Lucas

Is May too hot in Mexico?

Not at all. For most of Mexico, the weather is great during May and the hot late summer/early fall months are far from sight.

However, some locations, like Merida, can see average temperatures exceeding 86°F (30°C).

My recommendation would be to check weather forecasts for every location you plan on visiting before you book your trip.

Is it cheaper to go to Mexico in May?

A trip to Mexico can cost slightly less than the high season. The cost of flights varies depending on where you’re coming from, but overall they tend to be cheaper during May.

Airlines will often offer discounts or bonus miles for booking during this time so it’s important to look around and compare prices from different companies before settling on one flight.

A lot of hotels will also offer deals to entice tourists. You can take advantage of these lower prices to save quite a bit of money in the end.

Ultimately, if you want the best discounts and the biggest savings, you’ll have to plan your visit during the low season (June to October).

Just keep in mind that these are also the hottest months with somewhat unpredictable weather.

Cabo vs Cancun: which one is better?

This is a question many travelers ask when planning their vacation. Both Cabo and Cancun are popular tourist destinations in Mexico.

Cabo, located in the Baja California Peninsula, offers sun-soaked beaches and an atmosphere filled with luxury and relaxation.

On the other hand, Cancun is situated on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and boasts stunning white sand beaches lined with palm trees.

Whether you’re looking for a luxurious getaway or a fun-filled adventure, both destinations offer plenty to make your vacation unforgettable.

When making a decision between Cabo or Cancun, it ultimately comes down to personal preference based on what type of experience you’re looking for from your trip.
