Casa Santiago is one of the small boutique hotels in town just a little distance from Tulum Pueblo, in the new trendy neighborhood of La Veleta, with lots of palm trees and nature in and around it.

Since the hotel accommodates only a specific number of guests at a time, the attention to detail is great here.

Given the facilities and care you get in Casa Santiago, I can tell you that this hotel is easily one of the best cheap hotels in Tulum.

Each one of the six rooms in the hotel has air-conditioning, televisions, and a terrace or patio. There is free parking for the guests and WIFI is available throughout Casa Santiago.

The comfort of Casa Santiago Hotel is remarkable, but you will be so absorbed in admiring and connecting with the nature around it to notice that.

19. Kuukum Tulum Hotel

Kuum kum Hotel Garden and Patio
Kuum Kum Hotel Garden and patio

Hotel Kuukum Tulum is a very upscale and elegant property just on the edge of all things cheap in Tulum. The quiet solitude of the area it’s situated in is combined with the tropical greenery of the lush jungle surrounding it, and the terrace views are doubly amazing because of that.

There are many types of rooms in the hotel, all of them meticulously designed and kept spotlessly clean by the staff.

Since Kuukum is a 4-star hotel, it’s no surprise that the rooms in it are all air-conditioned, have flat-screen TVs, wifi, and other such amenities.

Hotel Kuukum is a large property, so that means all of the rooms are extremely spacious and comfortable. All the spaces of the property are touched with both boho chic elegance and traditional Mexican decor.

There is a garden, outdoor pool, sun terrace, and lots of services in the wellness center as well. Walking and bike tours, live music, themed dinner nights, and other recreational activities can also be arranged every now and then.

Overall, Kuukum Tulum Hotel is a fantastic place to stay in Tulum. The only thing I would mention here is that it’s a little distance from the bus stop, so that might be a problem if you don’t have a car.

Though the hotel has bike and scooter rentals, and its own airport picks and drop service and shuttle service as well (extra cost), it’s not that much of a problem.

On top of having air-conditioned rooms with comfy beds, the peaceful location of Lagoon Boutique just a 15-minute walk from the more active parts of town is pretty good too.

The nearby places are beautiful as well, and worth taking a stroll in. The nearest airport to the property is Cozumel International, but Lagoon Boutique has a shuttle service for both Cozumel International and Cancun International. The staff is also great here.

They pay attention to the things you may need or want, and go above and beyond in everything! Just keep in mind that the services of this hotel are adult-only.

And while you’re at it, there’s also a French-Italian restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows where you can enjoy a delicious meal enjoying the views outside, or you can try the lovely terrace.

There is also a cocktail bar that serves some of the most amazing drinks, and guests also have direct access to the romantic setting of the private white-sand beach of Mi Amor.

Moreover, the hotel’s cozy spa offers various treatments and healing therapies as well. Suffice to say, the lovely atmosphere and romantic vibe of Mi Amor hotel make couples fall in love anew.

The hotel is located in the north beach zone, nestled on a rocky cliff in the tropical forest of Tulum, right beside the Caribbean coastline.

As the name implies, the hotel is the perfect place for couples going on honeymoon or simply looking for a memorable trip in the Riviera Maya.

Apart from many of Tulum’s quality bars and restaurants, the Tulum National Park is also within walking distance from the hotel. One of Tulum’s most famous beaches, the Playa Paraiso, is also just a short walk from Mi Amor.

22. Hotel Bardo – Adults Only

The first downtown hotel on my list is an adults-only eco-chic lodging right off the elegant boutique hotel consisting of sophisticated villas surrounded by the refreshing greenery of Tulum’s jungle.

All the rooms of Hotel Bardo offer a romantic setting, with a private plunge pool and jungle surroundings.

All rooms are also equipped with a fridge, coffee machine, and air-conditioning, and have an additional seating area as well.

The room service is fantastic, and you will find the accommodations and environment worth a 5-star review.

The hotel also features a large outdoor swimming pool and an eco-chic open-air bar with a lounge. All the guests also have access to the terrace of the hotel, offering views of the expansive jungle area surrounding it.

Its thatched-roof restaurant is constructed of natural materials and has plenty of little plants in it as well.

The quality of the food here is really nice, the menus consist of a variety of foods and the cuisine is focused on replenishing the body with food prepared using freshest locally-sourced ingredients.

Apart from its lovely garden, the hotel also has a sauna, called Temazcal, a sound healing room, a spa, and offers its guests yoga classes as well.

Hotel Bardo is located on the outskirts of downtown Tulum, but the town center is just a few minutes of walk away from it.

23. Casa Malca

A recent addition to the beach resorts of Tulum, Casa Malca is a dream destination for couples as well as families.

With tons to offer on top of its excellent beach location, the hotel has quickly made its way to the top of Tulum’s best hotels list.

Most tourists who visit Tulum with a resort vacation on the beach in mind have heard of Casa Malca, and that’s not anything out of the ordinary for a place that used to be Pablo Escobar’s former mansion.

But the hotel isn’t only famous because of its past, it earns its reputation through a lot of great features and facilities as well.

Despite having been remodeled, Casa Malca preserves some of the most unique elements from Mexican and Mayan culture in its whitewashed design.

The interiors of the hotel feature artwork and handmade furnishings along with Mayan accents, and the rustic-chic decor is just perfect with the natural beauty around the property.

The suites in Casa Malca are extremely sophisticated and luxurious. They feature floor-to-ceiling windows, upscale beds and furniture, and the amenities common with the top Tulum resorts—including air conditioning, terraces/balconies, and modern appliances.

Some of the suites offer views of the gorgeously landscaped garden. The stunning private beach area of Casa Malca features thatched-roof cabins and the hotel also has a rooftop terrace with sun loungers.

You have full access to one indoor and two outdoor pools, a bar, and a wooden-style restaurant offering local cuisines.

Breakfast is included with every stay here, secure onsite parking is provided to the guests, and free wifi is also available all across the hotel.

And, since Casa Malca is one of the few hotels on South Tulum Beach right before the biosphere reserve, the atmosphere here is filled with serenity and quietude.

“The nicest resort I’ve ever stayed in. The rooms were gorgeous and the property even more amazing. The staff here were so friendly and accommodating and made our stay perfect. The food in tulum was some of the best anywhere and everything we ate at casa Malca was no exception. Not one bad thing to say about our entire week..

24. Be Tulum Beach & Spa Resort

Be Tulum Room

The final entry on my list, Be Tulum Beach & Spa Resort, is the definition of luxury with its design rooms and private villas.

It’s so luxurious that, if you want to experience the most exclusive and perfect beach vacation in Tulum, this would be the place I’d recommend.

Nestled in the jungle only a few steps from the beach, the lodgings in Be Tulum offer carefully-designed suites and villas.

There are more than enough facilities to make these accommodations stylish and upscale, while also giving them a touch of homelike comfort.

Other than the usual amenities like air-conditioning, internet, and private bathrooms available in all of its 64 lodging options, the suites include balconies, safe deposit boxes, iPod docks, and some even come with private pools or hot tubs.

When it comes to onsite restaurants and bars, Be Tulum has so many of its own. The hotel has a total of 4 restaurants serving delicious food and specializing in different kinds of cuisines.

Then there are the numerous bars of Be Tulum to delight your tastebuds with flavorful drinks.

The hotel also has a couple of outdoor pools, a thriving garden reflecting the jungle beauty around the property, and free secure parking.

Beach equipment is also available, and the wellness center on-site has great spa treatments for an extra charge.

Be Tulum is technically adults-only, but anyone above the age of 13 can lodge here so that’s not a concern for most people who want to enjoy an unforgettable stay in this unique hotel.

Be Tulum is also the perfect hotel to end a list of the best beach hotels in Tulum. So, I hope you found just the right luxury hotel on Tulum’s beaches for your next stay.

25. Ma’xanab Tulum

Ma’xanab is a relatively new addition to the luxury hotels of Tulum, but don’t let that make you think any less of it.

The hotel boasts a reputation for providing guests with one of the best stays in Tulum.

The 5-star hotel has fully air-conditioned rooms and all the other amenities to make your stay pleasurable.

The ambiance of this boutique hotel is very relaxing and laid-back, so it’s perfect for a peaceful retreat with direct access to the beach.

You won’t have to worry about noisy parties or too many crowds while enjoying the serene atmosphere of the hotel.

The hotel boasts an outdoor swimming pool and has a dedicated fitness center as well.

Moreover, its range of vegan foods alongside the delicious Mexican and international cuisine is a treat to the self.

Although, it’s worth mentioning here that the price for food and drinks is a tad bit higher, it’s justified by the taste and quality.

Ma’xanab is perfect for couples looking for a romantic excursion in one of Tulum’s most unforgettable nooks.

All the suites offer jungle or garden views, while the terrace garden of the hotel is a sight on its own.

Located in one of the best areas in Tulum, the hotel is just 150 meters from South Tulum Beach. The Tulum Archeological Site is just 10 kilometers from it, while the Tulum National Park is just 3 kilometers away.

Top guest review
“The resort was absolutely beautiful. The room was very comfortable and immaculately clean. The service and guest experience absolutely takes the cake though, the staff were very friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We will definitely be going back.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Tulum?

It is always a good time to visit Tulum but there are times of the year in which it’s better for some reasons and other times of others. So let me give you a brief overview.

Shoulder Season – From April Through May and From September Through November

These are the best months of the year to travel to Tulum if you are looking for good rates, and fewer crowds (my favorite time of the year) – In the fall you have more risk of hurricanes and the water is very humid and hot. But it’s worth the risk.

From June Through August

The sea temperature is warm and you can enjoy hot weather but also very humid with more chances of rain. It’s also the season where there is more risk of sargasso and, because it’s still high season you will find high prices and more people, especially kids.

From December Through April (Holy Week)

This is the high season for many good reasons. You will find many sunny days with blue skies and warm but not so humid weather. The water is cooler and so are the evenings. There is less risk of rain ( but it can rain, mind that!)

Prices will skyrocket at this time of the year and it’s also more crowded.

Read more in detail in my article on the best time to go to Tulum.

Tulum Beach Zone vs Tulum Own Town

Tulum Beach Area

The beach zone is a long strip of the best luxury hotels, fine dining restaurants, outdoor nightlife (beach and jungle parties), and lots of boutique shops.

The overall vibe of the beach zone is trendy and laid-back, and lodgings here are more expensive compared to the downtown area of Tulum, just because, well, they are not on the beach!

Down Town Tulum (Pueblo)

In Down Town Tulum (or Tulum Centro) is nothing charming, but you can find great restaurants and trendy shops. The new areas of Aldea Zama and La Veleta are more appealing and elegant though.

If you have your own car, which is recommendable if you are staying in Down Town Tulum, you will be happy to learn that they have just opened and paved a brand new road from La Veleta neighborhood so if you are on that side of Tulum Centro you don’t have to drive through the unbearable traffic.

Tulum Hotels on the Beach – Is It Worth It?

It depends on what you are looking for.

Tulum is a one-of-a-kind beach destination in Mexico when it comes to experiencing the resort vacation every traveler dreams of.

The spectacular beach in Tulum with its fancy hotels and beach clubs is only part of the experience.

Tulum is home to ancient Mayan ruins, mesmerizing cenotes, protected areas such as the Sian Ka’an biosphere, Tulum National Park, and many other attractions.

Not to forget the popular hipster vibes of the boho-chic culture, with a rich community of yogi and soul seekers, stylish hotels, and fancy restaurants all that in one tiny town that is growing every day attracting all sorts of travelers, from hardcore backpackers to Hollywood stars.

And many of them even decide to settle.

The glamour of Tulum used to be on the beach but with the development of the popular town, downtown luxury resorts in Tulum are just as glamorous.

So if you are asking whether it is worth it to stay on Tulum beach or not, my answer is Yes, if you have the budget.

However, the fact that you have so many things to do in Tulum makes it easier to move around if you stay downtown.

So you may want to split your trip in two, one in a beach hotel where you just enjoy the luxury it offers and never moves from there.

And then you can spend a few nights in a nice hotel downtown Tulum where you can join some tours to Tulum Cenotes and explore the surroundings.

Is Tulum Better Than Cancun?

There is no simple answer to that and it all boils down to what sort of vacation you are looking for.

I wrote a dedicated post about Cancun vs Tulum but I can share the main differences between the two top-rated Mexican destinations.

✅ While Tulum Town is pretty much walkable and filled with pretty restaurants and bars, Cancun Down Town is very dispersive and the opposite of appealing.

✅ Cancun Hotel Zone stretching along 20 km (approx) is mainly made of bulky all-inclusive hotels luxury and mid-range, high-end condo complexes, nightclubs, and malls. Here you will see lots of concrete buildings before seeing the beautiful turquoise sea.

Tulum Hotel zone is lined with cute boutique hotels, with a thick jungle as a backdrop. The buildings have a more eco-friendly feel in harmony with nature. You will also find lots of trendy shops and world-class restaurants.

✅ Cancun is less affected by the Sargasso

✅ They have a completely different vibe, Tulum is more laidback and yet stylish. Everything is a closer distance than in Cancun.

Is Tulum Safer Than Cancun?

I would say that both destinations are relatively safe if you stay aware of your surrounding and follow some common-sense rules. I wrote two posts about Safety in Cancun and Safety in Tulum so that you can compare.

However, I need to be honest, Tulum has become less safe than a few years ago, as there has been more robberies and crime of all sorts lately. I would exercise increased caution there, more than in Cancun.

Is Tulum Cheaper Than Cancun?

I wouldn’t say that. I believe they are equally expensive and if there is a difference Tulum is more expensive than Cancun. However since they have very different types of hotels, it’s difficult to compare.

Is Playa del Carmen Cheaper Than Tulum?

Yes, Playa del Carmen is definitely cheaper than Tulum, probably because of the competition with the neighboring cooler town, and the huge amount of properties available keep prices relatively lower than Tulum ones.

TULUM MEXICO RESORTS

Can You Walk to the Beach From Tulum Pueblo?

You could, but keep in mind that it’s a long way as the first nice beach is about 10 km from Downtown to the beach, depending on your departing point and which beach you want to get to.

If you decide to walk there is a nice sidewalk (which is also a cycle trail, so be careful) but take a bottle of water with you and sunscreen as the sun and heat can be strong.

TULUM MEXICO RESORTS

Are There Swimmable Beaches in Tulum?

Yes, all Tulum beaches (which is actually a long one) are definitely swimmable.

TULUM MEXICO RESORTS

Where Do Celebrities Go In Tulum?

I haven’t seen any celebrities but I read that some of them have been spotted in Tulum at Habitas, Azulik, and Amansala Resort & Spa.
