I have been to San Miguel de Allende quite a few times now and besides walking in awe around the historical center through its cobblestone roads and colonial architecture, every single time, I also took the time to visit its incredible boutique hotels.
Therefore in this post, I will share my favorite boutique hotels in San Miguel de Allende for mid-range and luxury stays.
The first things that come to your mind when you think about San Miguel de Allende are the gorgeous colonial architecture and stylish homes and hotels.
Proclaimed World Heritage Site by UNESCO and nominated the best city in Latin America and in the world, San Miguel de Allende, definitely won’t disappoint you.
As soon as I got the chance, I moved here and explored every corner, enjoy the cute little cafes, get inspiration from the hundreds of art galleries and try every restaurant.
Walking around the historical center is like going back in time as you look at the spectacular old facades, ancient buildings, and churches and stepping on cobblestones roads.
Not to mention the relaxing hot springs near San Miguel de Allende! Make sure you visit one of them if you are in town for a few days
The city is also brimming with top-notch restaurants, from fine dining to healthy cozy places but I will tell you all about them in another post.
I have been visiting many of them and I am here to tell you everything about what I liked so that you can choose what suits you best.
Top Luxury Boutique hotels in San Miguel de Allende
Here you will find my selection of the best luxury hotels in town, for their exceptional service, finest decoration, and charm.
My choice was also price-based, as these hotels have a rate starting from 250 USD per room per night up.
Please bear in mind that every hotel in San Miguel de Allende increases their rate of about 15-20% during weekends.
1. Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada
Staying at Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada is like stepping into an aristocratic old world. The hotel is actually distributed among 5 spectacular colonial buildings in the historical center, 4 around the main plaza and one by Benito Juarez street.
When I went for a visit, I was warmly welcomed by a kind receptionist who went out of his way to show me the only room they had available close to the reception area.
He brought me there, opened the massive door of the opulent building, and let me in. At the end of the entrance porch, two spacious and elegant rooms are situated around the beautiful garden and a short pathway leads you to the second and bigger garden where guests can enjoy a pool and sun loungers.
Other rooms on the ground floor and second level are located at the back of the building.
The rooms are actually suites, elegantly decorated with classic art pieces, and equipped with the finest amenities and high quality-linen. Every minimal detail is cared for.
I also had the chance to take a peek into the opposite building where the main restaurant is located. Tables and comfortable sofas are nicely distributed in the courtyard while an internal space is also available, and other rooms at the back.
This is one of the places I would look into if you love elegance and a great location since you will be right in the heart of San Miguel de Allende.
2. Casa No Name
A precious hidden gem, Casa No Name is a place that you should indeed visit even if you don’t feel like splurging. In my opinion one of the most beautiful luxury boutique hotels in San Miguel de Allende.
Located in an old mansion, you can still see the remaining of the old building, such as the frescos on the walls of the first courtyard, where breakfast is served.
Plants, arches and columns, vintage doors and a rooftop terrace, privacy, and finest art pieces are only a small hint of what makes this place so extraordinarily beautiful.
I find it so romantic and intimate, which makes it ideal for a couple’s escape. But honestly, I would be very happy here on my own as well.
3. Dos Casas Hotel and Spa
Member of the Design Hotels collection, this luxury property finely combines a modern look and design with the charming colonial feel of the old red brick walls and other details of the old luxurious building.
The suites are spacious and equipped with the most modern amenities. The gourmet restaurant offers delicious plates by a prestigious Italian-Mexican Chef and has been awarded by Travel & Leisure´s 2015 Gourmet Awards as Best New Restaurant and Best Hotel´s Restaurant.
The property is located only a 5-minute walk from the center and offers stunning views of the cathedral.
4. Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende
Located just outside the historical center of San Miguel de Allende but still at only 5 minutes drive (UBER is available in the area) Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende is very different from the usual hotels of the same brand.
It has a very unique feel in line with the San Miguel colonial architecture combining the old and new feel.
This is why I have included the property in this list although I haven’t actually visited it personally. I thought it would make a great addition to this list, for its special location in the countryside far from the hustle of the city noise.
5. Hotel Amparo
Located only two blocks from the main plaza, Hotel Amparo is a small luxury boutique hotel in San Miguel de Allende.
What guests love the most are the precious art pieces scattered around the property and the modern touches complementing the historical atmosphere of the entire place.
The design decor and lots of greenery are also very much loved features in this exquisite property.
6. Rosewood San Miguel de Allende
Rosewood doesn’t need explanations, as every hotel of the Rosewood Brand is always up to the standard of its name. This luxury property is located close to the park Benito Juarez in a quiet residential area. Although the hotel has been built from scratch, it conserves the same old colonial style and retro’ feeling.
The spacious rooms offer beautiful art fine amenities and modern comfort. The highlight of this hotel is the roof-top terrace restaurant with spectacular views over the city, especially at sunset. It’s, in fact, open for dinner and they serve tapas, and it’s, in fact, named TAPAS.
Sunday Brunch is a popular event among locals at Rosewood. For 500 MXN (25 USD) you can enjoy a scrumptious breakfast in style.
San Miguel de Allende Luxury Hotels
These selected hotels although didn’t make it to the top of my list of luxury boutique hotels in San Miguel de Allende, are still exquisite properties providing an authentic luxury experience. They have a price that ranges from 100 to 250 approximately per room per night.
7. Hotel Nena
In all honesty, this is my favorite boutique hotel in San Miguel de Allende, if possible. It’s a small intimate old mansion with spectacular spacious rooms full of charm and history.
The stone walls, the high ceilings, fine art pieces scattered around the property walls, furry carpets, and every little detail create a dreamy, romantic atmosphere.
From the rooftop terrace, you can enjoy spectacular views of the cathedral while relaxing and appreciating the elegant ambiance.
8. Hotel Matilda
Spectacular hotel in the town center featuring an ultra-modern design with vintage touches. Guests love the friendly staff and the soft high-quality linen and amenities, spacious rooms, and bathrooms. The hotel is also pet-friendly.
9. Hotel Boutique Hacienda del Santuario
In the proximities of Benito Juarez Park, this exquisite Boutique hotel does indeed look like an old luxury hacienda. It is completely designed in colonial style with precious antiques and stylish pieces of furniture and art. The spacious suites overlook a manicured garden. A great place to relax after a day exploring the city.
10. Casa 1810 Hotel Boutique
A beautiful historic building that has been turned into an elegant luxury hotel boasting pompous pieces of art and furniture from colonial times, spectacular artwork, and elements of decor as if to recreate the old atmosphere.
One of the highlights of this property is the location, in the heart of San Miguel de Allende, and the convenient rooftop terrace where to spend the evenings while sipping a cocktail and watching the sunset.
AFFORDABLE & COZY BOUTIQUE HOTEL
These hotels are much more affordable, below 100 USD a night per room, but still, have a lot of charm and are in line with San Miguel de Allende’s usual ambiance.
11. CASA LUNA HOTEL BOUTIQUE
Casa Luna Hotel Boutique offers a great quality/price value. The historical building has preserved its authentic feel while offering comfortable spacious rooms nicely furnished and decorated with local art and fine linen.
If you book the junior suite you will enjoy two exposures, French doors, and a lovely terrace. Guests also appreciate the friendly staff and the cleanness of the space.
12. HOTEL CASA ORATORIO
The highlight of this hotel is definitely the spacious rooftop terrace with swinging sunbeds and pool from where you can relax while admiring the views over the city rooftops and the cathedral. The location is also a great plus.
The rooms, although decorated in a simple style, are clean and spacious with comfortable beds and essential amenities. The building overall is in perfect line with the overall San Miguel Allende style, colonial and rustic.
13. Hotel Maria Isabela
Located in the historical center close to all the art galleries and major attractions, Hotel Maria Isabela offers an elegant and comfortable space at an affordable price.
The rooms are quite tiny but decorated in a minimal and modern style that elegantly combines with the charming historical building.

How to get to San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende is located only 1-hour bus from Queretaro, and at 1hr 20 minutes from Guanajuato, both amazing cities that you should visit too.
If you want to rent a car and explore the area, keep in mind that there are no car rentals in San Miguel. So you should be better off renting a car in Queretaro.
Getting around San Miguel is easy and within the historical center, everything is within a pleasant walking distance. However, if you want to get out of the city, UBER is also a great option.
Coming from Mexico City Airport to San Miguel de Allende you have now a direct bus with ETN but it leaves from Camino Real Hotel entrance and is not where the bus terminal is.
Browse through international and local car rentals and find the best deal.
Is San Miguel de Allende Safe?
Although the state of Guanajuato is not the safest in Mexico and has recently been a hotspot of some drug-related accidents, San Miguel is considered a safe city, always full of people on the streets. However, I would avoid narrow dark roads at night, and using common sense rules is always wise.
