Airbnb in Mexico is a popular accommodation option for tourists, for both long and short stays. You can find spectacular homes in unique locations that feel like your home away from home, literally. However, recently, the cost of Airbnb in Mexico has skyrocketed.
Taxes and cleaning fees can sometimes double the initial cost, making it far less desirable for a stay.
In this post, I will share the best of the best accommodation options in Mexico’s most popular destinations – all at a more straightforward cost as I now recommend reserving through Booking and VRBO.
Such a huge and diverse country, with the most amazing beaches, but also charming colonial cities, hidden waterfalls, incredible landscapes, barren canyons to lush tropical hills, Mexico has it all. And a lifetime is not enough to visit such an extensive territory, but I am trying.
After 10 years of living in Mexico and 1 year of exploring the country, I realized that staying in apartments and homes in Mexico is the most convenient way to live like a local, in a comfortable home with all the modern features and amenities, including fast wifi.
The best part of staying in a rental home or Airbnb in Mexico is the human touch. As I am writing this post I am sitting in a cafe’ in Valle de Bravo after coming back from an amazing Quad tour with the mum of the owner of the Airbnb where I was staying.
She took me around her city for free, just for the pleasure of showing me around and getting to know somebody interested in her country. That would not happen in a hotel.
I am not saying that these kinds of things happen every time you book an apartment or rental house, but I can definitely share with you so many stories of incredible people I met during my stays in Mexico – from the funny student in Xalapa to the owner’s cute dogs in Orizaba, the kindness of the owner in La Paz, Baja California, to name just a few.

Although Puerto Juarez is not a fancy area, you are close to the ferry to Isla Mujeres and a 10 minutes drive from either the beginning of the Hotel Zone and Cancun Down Town. You must have a car though unless you are willing to use a taxi every time you need to go out.

“Wow! What an amazing place. We stayed for a month working from home during the pandemic and lived like kings and queens. The house is perfect for a few couples since it has 3 equally luxurious king rooms. The location in SMA is as good as it gets – a short walk from the center and high enough uphill for spectacular views from the roof deck (but not so far uphill that the walk is too strenuous). The WiFi was also excellent – all 4 of us worked every weekday with zero issues. Thanks to our hosts and of course to our wonderful chef/housekeeper extraordinaire Paty for the month of our lives!“
